January-March 2014

....And once again, I start off by saying I'm trying to end the long break away from blogging. It's spring break and I have high hopes to write a few posts to catch up. However, a lot has happened since December and our boy is growing, developing, and learning like crazy!
So... Let's get started where I left off. I want to be sure to get as much as I can in writing, so we have something to look back on.

January (18 months)
  • after a little scare with red, swollen eyes while taking amoxicillin, it is now documented that Kaden's allergic to it. They aren't 100% sure but it was enough to not let him try it again.

  • picky eater (and still is. Maybe even worse now)

  • took his love for trucks to the next level

February (19 months)
  • first ice cream cone thanks to an episode of Blue's Clues that played over and over again
  • after playing and learning all about football from Dad, he got a hand-me-down helmet from an old student of mine. He isn't too sure about wearing it though. He wore it long enough for me to snap a quick picture.
  • not sure when this began, but one of his favorite hats is his "cone hat". I couldn't even get him to take it off to go into the store.

  • HCS was closed a lot during February due to bad winter weather, so that meant a lot of extra time on our hands. We even won free Chicfila for a year because of Kirby's mad song writing skills.

*knew majority of the alphabet

  • 5 Little Monkeys nursery rhyme caused Kaden to say "Fall down. Bump his head." All the time!

March (20 months)
  • 2nd "real" hair cut. Thank you lollipop for getting us through it.
  • worked on his basketball skills (bending and pushing the ball up and in)
  • he's a "dipper" now. He likes to dip his food into sauces. Mainly, mustard.

  • LOVES (I can't stress it enough) being outside! He likes digging in dirt, exploring in the yard, going for walks, looking for animals...

  • talks about his friends at school all the time. Ellie. Brantley. Rose. Bennett.
  • became more independent and tested his boundaries a lot more. Diaper changes were (and still are) either really easy (he tells us he pooped and he lays down to be changed) or it will be a hitting and kicking fight to get the job done.
  • He started hitting people and things this month (and again... still does) Usually when he's mad about something, tired, or he's playing around with us...trying to be funny.
  • started talking more in short sentences ("momma go" "eat breakfast" "take a bath")

Currently (21 months)
  • wears 18ish month shirts and shorts/pants
  • size 5 diapers
  • talks in sentences ("Momma play with us, too." "I go outside") and a few times even had a conversation with us ("Hey, Momma. Whatcha doing? Momma pickin' weeds?")
  • uses "thank you" appropriately
  • very shy around people he doesn't know... Shy=won't talk to them and says "no" when they try to say hi to him
  • aggressive with his toys. Daycare even asked us about it. He hits them or uses another toy to hit them.
  • can identify and count the numbers 1-10
  • loves brushing his teeth
  • drinks milk from a sippy cup with a straw
  • loves breakfast, but lunch and dinner are a struggle (macaroni and cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, bread/toast, sliced/shredded cheese... and grilled cheese, ravioli, and hot dogs are a hit or miss)
  • bedtime is around 7:30.  This was with hopes of him sleeping in later.  Didn't work.  He's up between 5-6 every day.... closer to 5
  • sleeps with his "papa and mukey" at nap and at night

Hopefully, I can keep up with these posts. I know my family reads them and I want so badly to do it for Kaden and our family. I want to be able to go back to reminisce.

16 months

Gosh!  We can't believe how fast he's growing and learning!

**Communication overload  He's talking and babbling stories all the time!  We'll often times overhear him "talking" to himself while playing.  He's repeating almost anything we ask him to say.  He says please without being asked sometimes.  Which by the way is the cutest sound ever!  Kirby and I can't say no to it.  We are working on Ma'am, Sir,  and thank you.

**first time out He's been testing the limits and exploring his independence a lot lately!  Therefore he had his first time out this month.  It's been from biting, hitting, and throwing things.  Thankfully, it hasn't happened too many times.

**sports  Football, baseball, basketball... anything with a ball.  He even imitates "calling the play" when playing football.  He yells "TOUCHDOWN!" whenever football is on TV.  Going to his first football game was a hit!

**climbing EVERYTHING!  It seems like overnight he grew tall enough to climb the couch by himself and then took off!  He's climbing toys (that aren't supposed to be climbed) and chairs and loves to climb everything at the playground.

**bumps, scrapes, and bruises... it comes with the above I guess...  He looks so beat up sometimes!

**diaper changes  These got worse this month.  He doesn't want to be still for any sort of time.  We usually need to turn on Elmo or Shania Twain to help distract him.

**Shania Twain  His new girlfriend.  Obsessed.  He will sit through several songs without moving.  This has helped in many situations (see above).  Thank you Shania!

**tubes This is the biggest thing this month.  He had another ear infection (double) and so we were referred to an ENT.  Our appointment is October 29, so we'll see what he says.  We have a feeling, after 9 infections, our little man will get tubes.

**loves hats, trains, shovel, blocks, and still books

(...even at daycare... even things that aren't a hat)

**Other random things to remember
cute projects from school all the time

loves to play in the car

we shoes... new jacket... new clothes!  Our boy is growing!

15 months

Gosh.
I don't even know where to start this month.  Things have been too crazy to blog lately, so I'm really behind (I sound like a broken record...sorry) on posting what's been going on.

This month has been full of:

1. temper tantrums
This has been a trying month for Kirby and I.  Parenting is a tough job I tell ya!  We aren't sure if it's a phase, something he learned at daycare, or something we are doing TOTALLY wrong, but he's had some major anger issues this month.  It's been a lot better lately, but about a week ago when he wouldn't get his way... right away... he would throw things or pull our clothing, push and/or scream.  Daycare said he might be seeing it from his peers.  He's also in pain from teething.  So who knows.  Like I said, it's not as bad this week so hopefully it was a short phase and it's over. ;) Pray.

2. sign language
He knows 4 signs.  He uses "please" most often.  If we remind him to "say please" or "use your manners" he'll rub his chest (the sign for "please").  We love it!  He also knows "more", "all done", and "eat".

3. climbing
He loves climbing on things....anything he can.  He may or may not have tried climbing on the dining room chair and it fell over onto him.  He may or may not have learned his lesson.  He didn't.

{TP is a lot safer, right?}

4. talking
Goodness gracious!  He's talking up a storm.  We thought last month was full of words, but his vocabulary has exploded this month.  A few new words I can think of that are pretty consistent are: ear, bear, water, E-en (Eden, a friend), Tis-ta (Christa, teacher from daycare), Elmo, bathtub, moo (moon), up, truck, helicopter, airplane.
{practicing flash cards is a new favorite game}

{reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear}

5. doctor visits
Not surprising, right?  Since I've been bad at documenting things, I'm not 100% sure, but I think we've seen the doctor 2 times this month.  The first time was for herpetic gingovastomotitis.  Don't google it.  Trust me.  Basically it's kinda like "hand food mouth" and causes cold sore type blisters.  He had them on his gums, tongue, lips, chin, chest (from drooling), and even his eye.  Having it on his eye was the scary part.  The doctor said if it spread to his eyeball, it could possibly cause permanent vision damage.  Luckily, it never spread.  It was highly contiguous though, so we had to keep him out of daycare for a week.  This was the first full week of school for us, so it was not the best timing for Kirby and I.  Thankfully, everything cleared up nicely though.

The 2nd trip to the doctor was last week when he wasn't acting right and had a temperature of 100 at daycare.  I came and got him early and Ms. Christa told me she saw mucus in his stool.  That evening he had diarrhea and more mucus.  His temperature went up too, so the next day I took him to the doctor.  He didn't really put a diagnosis on anything (besides the beginning of an ear infection), but thought it could be an intestine infection causing the diarrhea and mucus.  He just finished the antibiotic and feeling much better.

6. love for his friends/toys
He's been showing a lot of affection to people and toys lately... giving them high fives and hugs, sharing with them, kissing them.  It's so sweet!

7. Elmo
He's still watching the same Elmo video, he now has an Elmo toy (thanks Daveena), and even went to an Elmo birthday party (which was way cool... and I'll blog about that in a separate post).

8. learning animals
He knows so many animals and even knows how to make some animal sounds.  The pig sound is probably the cutest.  I wish I had a video.  He scrunches up his nose and sucks air in and out of his mouth.... not quite making the snort of a pig. ;)

9. teething
He finally got the top and bottom molars on one side, but we are still waiting on the other side.  His little gums are swollen and he's drooling like crazy, so hopefully it'll be any day.
10. hats
He loves hats!  Uncle Talan and Aunt Paula have helped contribute to the obsession... 2 of his hats being OSU ones.

14 months

You are 14 months big boy!
Here's what you've been up to lately-

** Even though, we still don't go a day... or even a few hours without him pointing out or talking about trash cans, he's have added 2 new loves!  He's really into obsessed with a Elmo dancing DVD and books.

**He loves... loves to be outside (also a new word he's been saying)!  He likes bug catching, playing with the water hose, exploring the rock beds, and recently... playing with the tree frogs in the back yard.  We have a straight-up BOY!

Some other "likes" this month:
1. "wrestling" with Dad
2. coloring
3. the sliding board at school
4. "driving" the golf cart

**He so badly wants to communicate with us.  He's been doing a lot of squealing and whining lately.  I think he's just doing his best to tell us what he wants/needs.

**a few new words: (lost count, but somewhere in the 20's)
cracker
up (repeated, upup)
top
frog
outside
Elmo

He's also pretty good with shaking his head and saying, "no".  He can also sign, "all done" when he's finished eating and "more".  This has helped so much!

**He's up to 9 teeth now! 2 more bottom ones and his first molar.  It won't be long before we see the other 3 molars.  He's been drooling like crazy!

**He's in 12 month clothing and size 4 diapers.

**Officially transitioned over to the 1 year old room!  (holding back the tears) That means art projects and naps on mats!  This is huge folks!

**And with daycare...comes the sicknesses.  He started a with a runny nose at the beginning of the month.  Now he's finishing the month with strep throat and another virus.

**He's eating better with utensils... even though he still goes back to using his hands when it takes too long.

**He "jumps" like a frog and "runs".
