I think our photographer (Carol Barnes- Blue Crush Photography) was amazing and can't wait to use her again (maybe when we have kids in a few years).

Here is Carol and her sister at our wedding. They had a long day before and a long night with us, but they did awesome! I would recommend them to anyone!

Oh... the memories! :)

Meet Fred and Ted

Today we had the annual storybook character dress-up parade at NMBP. Last weekend I went to Book-a-Million and searched for storybook characters for Kirby and I. After talking to some parents and looking through several books- I finally decided on Fred and Ted. They are 2 dog characters from the Dr. Seuss beginner books. The kids had a blast... here are a few pictures from the day.

... 3 little pigs and the big bad wolf

A gym packed full of Pre-K, kindergarten, & 1st graders..... WOW!

And a hallway full of more.... Everyone did not participate- so some of my students were the "judges". They are pretending to be the the next Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson.

Eat More Chickin'

Who's the cow you ask?!
Each year our school has a fundraiser at Chick-fil-A. Someone (that would be Mr. King) has to dress up as the cow and wave to parents and children as they come/leave school. I'm so proud of my husband... he even got his 5 minutes of fame on WEBS (our school's news broadcast) that morning!

some pics....

Kirby likes the long stories.... I like the pictures. Here are some pictures to go along with what's going on in our lives now.

This is our newest purchase in the house. We haven't decorated the walls around it yet, but...

hey one thing at a time, right?

As you've read in the last post, both of us have changed our diets in the past month or so. Even on Valentine's day we stayed within the parameters of our diet. This is what our romantic Valentine's Day dinner consisted of....

Last Saturday we went to see one of our students play basketball for a church near us. It was such a blast to see the young kids from our area playing (double dribbling, traveling :-)... playing defense while on offense... carefree and having fun!

Bring it!!!

"Bring it!"... that's been our "motto" lately. About a month ago, Anna and I began the P90X workout program for something a little different. Just like everyone else, we've had our "ups and downs" when it comes to eating right and exercising. We fell into an "unhealthy rut" after our wedding and ate out for dinner more often than we ate in. Our biggest weakness was good 'ole Mexico Lindo, our favorite restaurant about a mile from our home. We ended up eating there about 1-2 times per week and ordered the same thing every time... grilled chicken quesadillas (3 for me, 1 for Anna), chips (3-4 baskets full), salsa (about 4 bowls), cheese dip, and a couple glasses of Pepsi. If I had to guess, my caloric intake for that one meal alone was probably 3,000-3,500 calories. Working out wasn't a big part of our vocabulary at this time either, with only the occasional workout here and there.

So, after noticing a bit of a "spare tire" circling my waist (something I had never experienced in the 37 years prior), and after seeing the success stories of a couple of Anna's friends from college (thank you, Tom and Ashley), we gave P90X a try. Being certified as a personal trainer and someone who has been into fitness and working out since they were about 10 years old, I had never been a big fan of popping in a video or dvd in order to workout, but P90X has changed my views a bit. It's a series of 1-1.5 hour hardcore workouts that are done for 90 days straight. If you're not completely fatigued at the end of each workout, either you weren't really there, or you didn't "bring it!" (the phrase that is repeatedly used on the dvd's). If done right, each workout is said to burn about 600 calories. As demanding as the workouts may be, that's actually the easy part in all of this. Toughest part? Yep, you guessed it... the diet part. Just like the rest of this world, we love food. Dare I say the greatest addiction of all time is the "drug" we call food. I think it's safe to say, the majority of us all has some level of addiction towards food. The dietary guidelines of the P90X program are very strict and are broken down into 3 monthly phases. As any true fitness professional will tell you, what you eat is at least 50% of the equation (the rest being exercise) in achieving a sound, healthy lifestyle. While following an exercise program, too many people place too little emphasis on the diet aspect, and almost always, their results suffer. Something Anna and I use a few times daily to log what we eat is www.thedailyplate.com. Here, we track everything that we eat. If it has calories, we have to track it. The phase we are in right now requires Anna to eat 1,700 calories per day and myself, 2,400. Those calories must come from 50% protein, 30% carbs, and 20% fat. The great thing about "the daily plate" is that it tracks and calculates everything for you (including the percentages). Without it, this eating thing would be a nightmare.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling on with the days fitness lesson. We just wanted to share what's been consuming most of our time lately.

Snow in South Carolina

Well all you northerners... we DO get snow in South Carolina! It didn't last long though! That's why the teachers (during a work day) took a break and ran outside to enjoy it while it lasted!

And for my teacher friends out there... you'll appreciate this. It was a professional development day and we were sent home early (12:30) and told that the next day we would have a 2 hour delay. I think we all needed that extra break... I know I sure did!
Poor Kirby wasn't able to make it. After finally feeling better from being home with the flu, he was back at the doctor last Saturday only to find out he has strep throat. He went back to school today and he's feeling much better though.
Until next time....I think it'll be awhile until we see snow in SC again!

Reunion Time!!!

Hello everyone. We hope you all had a nice holiday and a happy new year! We both went back to work this week after having about two weeks off. We had quite a bit going on over the break, especially Anna. Our break started with a visit to my hometown in western Maryland. We had a nice stay with my mother, Frani, and stepfather, Ed. On Christmas Eve, we headed to my sister Sherry’s home and spent some quality time with various family members. We visited my grandmother’s home the following day on Christmas, then headed home to SC the next. Two days later was a very important one in Anna’s life. After being apart for 23 years, Anna became re-united with her birth mother, Julie, and birth grandmother, Judy. Julie had been trying to contact Anna for all these years. However, there were a few obstacles that always kept the two from being re-united. The last time they had seen each other was when Anna was five years old.

Their first contact occurred when Anna was able to obtain Julie’s email address and emailed her Thanksgiving evening. They continued emailing one another numerous times over the next few weeks and decided to meet in person shortly after Christmas. The reunion was a very good one. It is unfortunate it has taken this long to finally happen. Both Julie and Judy are great ladies and we’re glad to have them as part of our lives now (as well as this whole other side of the family Anna never knew of). During their time here (they drove about 12 hours from Ohio), we enjoyed ourselves by going out to dinner a few times, having a couple “game nights” playing Rummikub and Scrabble, and Anna and Julie went on a little shopping spree at the local outlets one day. During our time spent together, and through about 150 emails, Anna learned so much about her past she never knew. All in all, it was a great experience and we look forward to having all these great people added to our lives. We are both thankful to all our family and friends who have been so supportive with this.

Here's a video of their reunion... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtVd4BUTxi8

Some reunion pics...

While Anna’s been keeping busy with back-and-forth contact with Julie and loads of school work, I’ve been doing my usual. After breaking my ribs a couple months ago surfing, I was able to recently get back in the water for a few fun sessions. Here's the surf forecast I check everyday... http://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/myrtle-beach-south-carolina.html and here's my favorite ocean webcam not too far from our house. I check this so I don't have to go to the beach to see what the surf looks like... http://mail.seasideproperties.com/avwebcam2.shtml . Anna bought me a set of wetsuit gloves and a hood for Christmas to go along with the wetsuit and boots I already had. Now I'm set to get in the water no matter what the temperature. For my motorcycling friends out there, I just "gutted" my exhaust system and removed the baffles and catalytic converters, then replaced all that with a 2.5" piece of perforated pipe wrapped with exhaust re-pack. It took me about 8-hours total time, but was well worth it... a few more horsepower and a nice, deeper v-twin tone. Here's a video of the end result... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf-If1RzX_E .
