2 month shots, oh no!

Our poor little man had to get his 2 month shots on his 2 month birthday (which happened to be the day before school started...bad idea).  I told the nurse how nervous I was and how I'd probably have to leave the room.  Nope.  She said she makes all her moms stay in the room.  She said it's good for them.  She said I needed to be in the room for Kaden.  So I did.

Dad held Kaden's arms down while he got prick after prick after prick.  We Kaden made it through with a few screams and some tears, but with a quick feeding afterwards, he was good to go. :)

That night though... different story.  He screamed like we had never heard before.  His leg was swollen, red, bruised, and hard.  We took his temperature... 99.2.  We gave him Tylenol and it didn't calm him down.  Even feeding, didn't work.  Being first time parents, we were worried that it wasn't "normal", so we called the doctor.  He eased our minds though and told us it was all okay.

It was our first day of school the next day, so we panicked as we tried to figure out what we were going to do the next morning if he had a temperature or didn't feel well enough to go to daycare. Luckily, we have great friends and had them lined up just in case.  The next morning things were great though, and the day went off without a hitch. Thankfully his pain didn't last long.

Lesson learned though... don't schedule your child's shots the day before an important event.

Now we have the 4 month shots to look forward to... yay ;)

2 months old

health
What we thought was a underdeveloped tear duct, ended up being a hemangioma.  Read the post here.  He may just have had his first little cold too.  Poor guy!

He's long and lean...at 10lbs 14oz and 23inches long!  Still the 15th percentile in weight and 50th percentile in length.  Consistency.

sleep
He was getting so much better at naps during the day.  Now that he started daycare, he's not sleeping as much.  Hopefully, he'll get adjusted to all the different noises soon and start to get some more sleep.  The past few nights when we got home, he was OUT.  He's been so tired.
The first cycle in the night is usually between 3-5 hours and then from then until morning, it's every 2-3 hours.  I'm not even sure he wants to eat during those times either because he only eats for about 10 minutes or so (much shorter time than normal).  I think the gas is waking him up... maybe?  Any advice in this area would be great!

sizes
He's all over the place in clothes.  From newborn (a little tighter) to 3 months (a little bigger)...
I packed a lot of the newborn clothes up though to give away to a friend. I can't believe we don't have a newborn anymore!
I tried to use up all the rest of the newborn diapers we had, but he officially moved up to the size 1 diapers now!  Last week he had 2 major blowouts at daycare (one of them was so bad, Miss Barbara had to go home on her lunch break and change her clothes!), so I guess that was a hint to move him on up.

diet
He eats every 3 hours... a little longer in between at daycare.
He seemed to go through a growth spurt at about 6 weeks and ate every 2 to 2-1/2 hours.

dislikes
being swaddled with his arms... at least he doesn't think he likes it.  Once he's asleep... he likes it (and so do we) ;)
He's still battling some gas issues... and doesn't like it either.  Who likes gas anyway?

strawberry boy

As you may or may not have known from this post, Kaden is experiencing his first "bump" in the road through life.  His eye wasn't healing the way we thought it would, so we scheduled an appointment and they saw us right away.  After describing some things we noticed, the doctor pushed really hard on the swollen area under his eye, as if to pop whatever was underneath, but wasn't successful.  Then we heard the news... he quickly said we'd have to go to MUSC in Charleston, SC, to have a specialist check it out.  He thought it looked like a hemangioma (don't look that up if you don't know what it is... scary pictures).  Then he scared the crap out of us even more when he said "they might just wrap him up and probe it".  WHAT?!?!... our little baby, probed?!?!  Or he could possibly have surgery.  At this point, Kirby and I didn't know what to think or say...but we were both super shocked!

This was our first (and I know it won't be our last) "bump" in the road.  I walked out thinking the worst, and scared to death for Kaden.  We couldn't imagine our son going through something that would hurt him or even worse, surgery.

From there, we were scheduled an appointment for the following week (Friday, August 17) to have it checked out.  Our little man did a great job on the 2 1/2 hour drive there.. only crying when he was hungry.  We stopped once each way to feed and change a dirty diaper.

{diaper change in the back seat}

The appointment went very well and wasn't nearly as bad as we had thought it could have been. There was no "wrapping and probing" and no talk of surgery. They did pull on his eye, flashed a few lights at it, and put some dilation drops in them too, but overall not too bad.

After asking several questions to the very patient doctor, the bottom line is... it is a hemangioma (a cluster of small blood vessels, aka a "strawberry mark"), but it looks good. They checked and found out it wasn't affecting his vision either. As long as it doesn't grow rapidly, we go back in 3 months to have them check it again. If all goes well, it will go away on its own, but may take 3-5 years. So hopefully all we'll have to worry about is a puffy and purplish eyelid for a few years. I think we can handle that.

We are very thankful it was nothing worse. We pray for his continued health in this area. We are glad this "bump in the road" was just that... a bump.

kid's menu please?

We were brave and ventured out for our first trip out to eat as a family of 3. Of course, we picked Mexico Lindo to be his first experience. He did very well considering the new atmosphere. He didn't fuss too much and Kirby and I both left full (and without to-go boxes).  Success.

meeting Dave & Dar

Kaden got to meet Dave and Darlene last weekend!

It was nice to see them and catch up.  We had a great time hanging out at the house, eating and playing games as usual.  Can't wait for next time!

Uncle Alex

It's been way too long since we've last seen my brother.... over 4 years!  Distance sure does make the heart grow fonder.

Uncle Alex was the first one in my immediate Hosner family to meet Kaden.  He drove all the way from Ohio (10+ hours) by himself!  It sure meant a lot to Kirby and I... and I know Kaden too.  We didn't do very much during his stay except hang out and "play" with Kaden, but it was perfect.  The two of them bonded so great!

We can't wait for the next visit to come again soon!
