first sick doctor visit

At 5 weeks old, Kaden went to the doctor for what we thought was an eye infection.  Come to find out, it was an undeveloped tear duct.  The doctor prescribed him some eye ointment and it's supposed to help.  We hope it does because the poor guy has a swollen, goopy eye until then.

Other than that... he's a healthy boy.  He weighed 9 pounds 12 ounces!  That's a big jump from a few weeks ago.  He's finally starting to get some meat on those bones!

mom or dad??

We still can't figure out who Kaden looks like.

A lot of people say he looks like Kirby because of the hair.  ...but what do you think?

another first- WalMart

Woot! Woot!  The other day we had to go to WalMart and b.k. (before Kaden) we'd jump in the golf cart and ride over together.  Now that we have a little one, it makes the process a lot more complicated.  Sooo... after packing the diaper bag, getting the Moby wrap ready (in case of a "crying his eyes out" emergency), and mentally preparing for our first big public trip out, we headed that way... in the car, not the golf cart of course.

He wasn't too sure what to think as we walked in, but after a few confused looks and some whimpering, he closed his eyes and made the best of the bumpy, noisy ride in the cart.  Half way through the trip, some ladies in the freezer section suggested we put a blanket on him.  I knew in my head we didn't need to since we were leaving that isle soon, but I did it anyway.  He continued to sleep until we were just about to walk out (in the hot and humid temperatures... blanket still on him). He gave us just enough time to ask a random lady to take a family picture of us and then he, understandably, let loose and wouldn't stop crying wailing.  After doing everything we could to console him, he finally calmed down when we got home and took his clothes off of him to cool off.

We did however get everything on our list and he seemed to get a little snooze too.
Again... success.

brunch & babies #2

Kaden's first outing with Mom was on Friday, July 20th.  We went to the 2nd annual Brunch & Babies at Miss Linda's house.  This time I didn't need a stand-in baby... I had a real one!  I only pulled over one time to check on him and had just a bit of anxiety when he cried around everyone.  Kaden had a good time & Mom was able to try to relax.  Success.

first real bath

First real bath was a success!

It's a good thing he couldn't tell mom and dad had no clue what they were doing!  We got him in the tub and that's when Kirby asked me... "so how are we supposed to do this now?"  We figured it all out though and in the meantime Kaden just chilled out.  He was lovin' the warm water... so much that at one point he fell asleep!

Since the first bath was such a success, we have high hopes for all the fun baths to come!

{Thanks Miss Tina for teaching my mom the rubber duckie trick}

Boys & bottles

Kirby is doing the last feeding of the night with a bottle and it's been going pretty well.  He really enjoys this part of the day with Kaden.

Monday, June 16th was Kaden's first bottle from Dad.  It started off great!  Dad was grinning with pride and Kaden was satisfied with his new way of eating.  We were so excited... I started taking pictures of Dad and got my phone ready to send our family a proud picture of the experience.

Then, chaos started... we decided it would be a good idea to burp him half way through, but Kaden didn't think it was that great of an idea!  He did not want to take the bottle again after that.  There was a lot of screaming/crying... then Kirby tried to change his diaper to calm him down (he enjoys that...haha).

THIS is the best part of the story... haha!  He changed his diaper and as he was letting him dry and air out we thought we should elevate the changing table pad and continue feeding him.  Just when we thought things were going good again... he has a nice big blowout!  It didn't phase him though!  He just sat comfortably and finished eating... all while his dad held his bottle, mom held the changing table pad, and he sat in his own little big mess.

Now that's a story for the girlfriends later in life!

1 month old

health
He's doing good in this area... except for some gas (which I hope we've solved the problem by changing my diet and using gas drops) I'm not sure what his weight is now, but I know he's gaining.  He's starting to get baby rolls.

sleep
He's been a great sleeper at night!  We think it's because we started off right away keeping it bright and noisy during the day and dark and quiet during the night.  Whatever it was, mom is one happy camper!  Nap time is a different story though.  We are working on nap time.  He doesn't want to miss anything!  His poor little eyes sometimes are so red and tired-looking.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

sizes
At about 3 weeks old he started to wear some of his 0-3 months onesies.  He's still rockin' the newborn things too, but our boy is definitely growing.  He's still in newborn diapers.  They're getting a little snug on his soon-to-be rolly thighs, so I'm sure we'll upgrade to the size 1 soon.

diet
He started out eating about every 2 hours, but at about 3 1/2 weeks he started eating every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
Boy oh boy... does this boy have belly problems!  He loves to eat and never has a problem wanting to eat, but something is bothering his belly.  We had a few days when he only had one good, full bowel movement and it was diarrhea.  He wakes up from a dead sleep screaming at the top of his lungs for less than a minute and then falls back asleep.  When he's not sleeping or eating, most of the time he's crying.  We have done the bicycle with his legs and massaged his belly too.  At about 3 weeks old, we started him on some gripe water.  Through our many google searches to help us with this problem, I've read a lot about milk allergies, so we decided to try taking milk out of my diet.  Again, any suggestions are welcome.

**UPDATE- the above was written a few days ago...
The past few days his belly seems to be feeling better and the bowel movements are becoming more regular.  I'm not sure if it's my diet change, the gripe water, or maybe something else.... who knows?!

likes
changing table-
We are thinking about buying another changing table pad for him...haha!  He loves his changing table.  After he gets his diaper changed, he can just lay there forever.

walks-
If he's not over the top tired, he loves walks.  Most of the time he'll fall asleep, but there has been a few times when he stays wide awake!  Remember, he doesn't like to miss anything!

reading & his favorite stuffed animal, Jeffery the Giraffe-
We haven't done much of this lately because he's always fussy when he's awake now.

hanging out without his diaper on-
Crazy boy loves this!  He's the happiest camper with this diaper off... hangin' out, passin' gas.  The minute we try to put his diaper on, he straightens those skinny legs and fights us on it.  It cracks us up!

play mat-
He's just starting to track the mobile and look at the hanging toys above him.

dislikes
Around 3 weeks he started to have enough of having his arms in the swaddle.  We'll swaddle him with them in, but it doesn't take long for him to wiggle those arms back out.

And the biggest dislike... belly problems.  That is definitely what bothers him the most.  He spends most of his time crying because of his belly.... poor guy.

milestones
frowning- I wish I could get a picture of this!  It breaks my heart to see him do it... and I think he knows it too!  I can't wait to see some happy expressions soon.
tracking- he's been doing a great job tracking Mom and Dad's face and his mobile on his play mat.
tummy time- he definitely has some strong muscles!  He's taken a lot of naps on our chests, so he's strengthened his muscles that way too.

bath time- he's enjoyed them more and more every time we give him one.  Soon enough we'll be able to give him a real bath once his umbilical cord falls off (which is taking forever by the way).

**UPDATE- his umbilical cord fell off in the middle of the night on 7-19.  We called the doctor the evening before and she said to bring him in the next day.  Luckily it fell off and we didn't have to go in.

smiles... I know, most of them probably aren't the real ones, but they sure are cute :)  We're pretty sure he's given us a few non-gas smiles, too!

bottles from Dad (a separate post on that later)

Father & Son

I am very behind on blogging and I'm trying to catch up the present day, but it's soo hard.  I'm trying to sleep when he sleeps (like so many people tell us), so it doesn't leave much time for blogging.  Since I use our blog as a scrapbook for our life... and now for Kaden's... I want to be sure to document everything.

Here are a few father/son moments I captured...

Dad time on the floor... watchin' TV

Our favorite thing to do with Kaden

Dad teaching Kaden all about his new home .  I love how Kaden is staring at him :)
