DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

Or you'll end up like this...

We've done it several times before, so it was bound it happen... we just didn't expect it to happen then. Our golf cart has been out of commission for a few weeks now and after many attempts at fixing the problem, Kirby finally got it fixed the other day. He was so excited to finally use it, so we went out Sunday night and I pulled him around on his long board.

This is how the adventure started out.

And you already know the outcome wasn't the best! Let me give you some more background. Kirby wanted me to slingshot him across the cul-de-sac like I've done before. I usually slow down a bit, but he'll usually tell me to go faster. This time I listened and went faster.... but I guess too fast. He couldn't make the turn and instead of crashing the board (he wanted to save it and not himself) into the curb and falling into the grass (which would have been less severe), he jumped off and (of course not able to run at about 15-20 miles per hour) rolled a few times on the pavement. I looked back just as he began rolling... and it didn't look good! He laid there for a few minutes in silence and then actually thought about getting back on the board and riding home!!

I grabbed the board (which by the way was left unscathed) and my big kid husband and drove home. We actually laughed on the way home about the whole thing, not knowing what we were in store for. When we got home, he iced his shoulder, hip, and wrist for about 20 minutes.

It was at this point, he realized he probably had a broken bone. He couldn't straighten his arm and was beginning to feel some more pain. We quickly got in the car and drove to an Urgent Care, but they were closed. That didn't help the night because we had to drive about 15 more minutes (which seemed like forever) to Grand Strand Emergency Room. The pain seemed to get worse the closer we got to the ER. As soon as he stepped out a few steps away from the car, he let out a very loud yell! He couldn't even walk because the pain was so bad. He says that was the worst pain he'd ever been in. He made it to the enterance of the ER and he felt it again. I got him a wheelchair which helped a little bit, but even as we waited he kept getting muscle spasms which made the pain come back.

...And after a few painful xrays, medication, and a hospital dinner of crackers, peanut butter, and orange juice, we found out he had broken his radial head (part of the elbow).

Tuesday, we went to the orthopaedic to get a cast... and with it came a little more bad news. Kirby asked the doctor to x-ray his shoulder because it was giving him problems and was painful. The doctor gave him some good news and bad.

Bad
1. head of the clavical/shoulder was broken also

2. no working out or surfing (or anything for that matter) for 12 weeks

Good
1. both breaks are small and could be worse

2. no cast, just a sling

So here is Kirby today. He's getting used to sleeping upright, doing everything with his left hand, and so much more. I knew my husband was an active guy, but I was reminded again after this accident. The poor guy can't do much. We'll find out more in 3 weeks when he goes back for more x-rays. We'll update everyone again then!

Finally an update

It's been awhile since we've blogged. I'm going to give you a quick update on some of the things that we have been up to.

1. About a month ago, Kirby nominated a student for the Quarterly Citizenship Award for the city of North Myrtle Beach. Between all the schools in our area, Maddy was chosen. Read the article below (click on it to enlarge)...

2. Mayfest on Main was last weekend. It's one of the many times they shut down part of Main Street and fill it with vendors, live bands and local performances. Eddie Money was the main act on the big stage. Kirby usually knows a lot more about the artists than I do and so he filled me in on some of the oldies, but goodies that he sings. Here are some pictures/videos...

3. Kirby and I went to the Blue Crab Festival this weekend. It was full of great fried food (even fried pickles- reminds me of Jed's in Toledo), good music, and lots of vendors to check out. Kirby ate some good ol' southern fried seafood and I got myself some "fair fries" doused with lots of vinegar. After soaking up the grease, Kirby helped me find Amy's newborn baby Kendall, a headband. After looking for awhile, I ended up with a book for her oldest daughter Chloe, but no headband.

We had a good time. Here are a few shots.

birthday party

Kirby and I were invited last Saturday at a 7 year old birthday party. Buddy (one of my students this year & a Krunch Kids the past 2 summers) turned 7 and had some kids from school and Mr. King and I at his bowling/pizza party! Of course Kirby couldn't resist the pizza and I was ready to show some first graders up in bowling... so we went. :)

Here are some pictures-

Kirby hurt his back earlier that weekend and couldn't bowl, but by the end of the party Mr. King had made a quite a few ponytails with a balloon for decoration in the girls' hair.

When the surf is flat...

Anna and I are still enjoying our spring break. It's been close to 80-degrees the past couple of days and the trend is supposed to continue. We hit the beach for most of the day yesterday. Got a little too much sun so we took today off. We were going to take a little drive up the coast today to Wilmington, NC, as Anna wanted to do a little shopping at a scrapbook store there. She's been getting into it more lately, and had a couple scrapbook sessions this week at different friends' homes. After calling the store, she learned they closed shop.

Soooooooo, we did what any couple would do after learning a scrapbook store 1.5-hours from home was no longer open... we went to one of the local surf shops and bought a longboard skateboard. OK, OK... I went to buy the longboard and my wife went with me. However, I think she was more excited about it than me. I had been looking at something called a Carveboard (sort of like a giant skateboard w/ inflatable tires) for a while. Just something to play around on to feed my surfing jones when the surf is flat. Supposedly, it's the closest feeling you can get to surfing on dry land. Downside is, you need big hills to get the most out of one, as all you basically do is carve back and forth down the hill (much like surfing or snowboarding). Since we don't have any real hills here at the beach, I figured a longboard would be a good alternative. Yeah, yeah... some of you are scratching your head and thinking "You bought a what?" "How old are you?" To that, I say, young enough to crack a grin when messing around on one :-)

To make it even more fun, Anna and I towed each other around the neighborhood with the golf cart. Even after Anna bailed and skidded face first down the asphalt (good thing she had on some protective gear), she got right up and had another go at it.

Spring Break has begun...

No better way to start spring break than a fun little surf session last evening. While Anna was having dinner with a few friends, I was just a stone's throw away getting wet off 6th Ave. South. In my 15 years of surfing, I've never had any photos taken of me with a hi-end camera. Well, that was until last night. The surf wasn't all that great when I first got there, but the winds shifted and it started to clean up after about an hour. Shortly after, I noticed a guy with a camera on a tripod taking pics of me. He kept shooting for about 45-minutes, at which time I got out of the water. He approached me and graciously offered to email me the pics. The surf wasn't huge, but I was pretty stoked nonetheless to see the pics and how clear they turned out. The guy who shot the pics is Danny Robbins, who owns Danny's Quality Painting (843-446-5325), and does photography on the side. For any locals reading this, Danny is a stand-up guy, so if you're looking for a painter, pressure washing, or drywall repair, give him a call.

Anyway, here are some of the many pics he took...
